The fourth year of the SCCA Texas Region’s venture into Time-Speed-Distance (TSD) road rally took place on a scorching hot Saturday in August with the successful running of the Tick Tock Rally! A Regional Tour skillfully designed by Rallymaster Liz Witt and enabled by the Richta App suite. The event covered the scenic, twisty Wise County roads north of Decatur, Texas, and through the LBJ National Grasslands. As usual, we held a virtual/Zoom Rally School and recorded it a week before the Rally to help teams prepare for the event.
Eleven cars successfully navigated the 13 legs with 76 timed checkpoints over 81 miles. Contestants ended and gathered at Ritzi B’s Smokehouse and Grill for tasty BBQ and post-event camaraderie, followed by results and awards.
On a weekend with temperatures soaring above 107 degrees, the Texas Region held a Solo and Time Trials event. A dramatic reminder of a RoadRally “competitive differentiator” over other disciplines: no helmets or fire suits required, and the ability to roll up the windows and enjoy the comforts of a/c!
Awards were given to the lowest scores in each entrant class: First Timers and Seat-of-the-Pants (SOP) for those with prior experience, plus one Master team. There are no calculating contestants at this event on the roster. Congratulations to the winners and all precision-driving contestants! Overall, the best score and First in SOP Class was the team of Misty and Ethan Wisely. Second place Overall and best in First Timer Class resulted from the truly electrifying performance by the Team of Grant Cox and Nikki Littrell in a Tesla Model 3.
All in all, an enjoyable Rally Day. Thanks to John and Phyliss Camp for the safety check and pre-check work and to Ronnie Arnold for Lead Car assistance, all helping make this possible.
