The fourth Texas Region RoadRally season event was held on Saturday, April 29—the Spring Paradise Trek on scenic and winding North Texas roads. Ten cars joined the drive on a great day for rallying – sunny if a bit windy. We welcomed three first-timer teams to the rally along with a few folks that have run other recent events and, in some cases, have been rallying with us for many years!
We set out from The Horny Toad Café & Bar in Denton, which hosted the event check-in, as they have for other rallies over the years. We wound our way on Denton and Cooke County backroads, passing by Sanger, Bolivar, and Slidell.
A highlight of the event was a midpoint visit to Eagles Canyon Raceway (ECR), where we enjoyed lunch and camaraderie and watched motorcycles and cars at speed on that great track. And as a surprise, we got to drive a parade lap on the track! Thanks, Brad and Nick, for squeezing that into a busy Member Day schedule. ECR is familiar to those of us participating in track days, including SCCA’s TNIA, and a great introduction to others who hopefully will try out this other way of having “#fun with cars.”
From ECR, we traveled twisty Wise County rural roads, traversing the LBJ National Grassland. Unusual sights along the way included a sprawling junkyard in a thickly wooded area in the middle of nowhere (only in Texas?), a nudist park (we didn’t stop, but maybe next time?), and Cuba (historical site of unknown origin). We ended our journey in Paradise, Texas. Though quaint, it’s not exactly the glorious place some might aspire to reach after life throws you the “checkered flag,” but it had to do for that day.
All in all, a fun and successful Rally Day. More to come as creative itineraries take shape.
