Richta GPS Checkpoint Updates, Direct from Richta HQ in Larryville, Kansas

October 2021

As we near the end of the 2021 road rally season, I want to provide some perspective on the current state of the Richta GPS Checkpoints suite of apps and share some plans for next year.

The use of these apps has grown steadily this year. As I write this in mid-October, 99 events have used or plan to use this system in 2021. That is significant growth from the initial launch in April 2019, when 16 events used the system that year and 58 events in 2020. The apps are being used by several independent rally clubs (Central Ohio, Portland, and Seattle) and increasingly by Porsche Club of America Regions and the original base of users in the SCCA.

This September, a milestone was passed when the 100,000th timeslip was logged in the GPS Checkpoints database, by a motorcycle rider, on the Rainier Auto Sports Club’s Nor’wester Rally in the Pacific Northwest.

I am very proud of the adoption of these apps by several signature events around the country. In addition to most rallies in the SCCA National Championship, the Press on Regardless Rally in Michigan, John Buffum’s Summer and Winter Challenges in New England, and the Oregon Cascade Gear Grinder’s Mountains to the Sea Rally are among the events timed and scored with these apps for the second year running. This September, the two-day RASC Nor’wester Rally out of Seattle used the system for the first time; the results are such that the 2022 Alcan5000 will see their use.

Another point of pride for me is the resurgence I’ve seen in several smaller clubs and regions where the scarcity of checkpoint workers has caused the number of events to decline. With no worries about the logistics of moving checkpoint workers around during an event, road rallies may run with a minimum of workers, and events are easier to organize.

I continue to receive positive feedback about one of the main features of these apps: the immediate scoring feedback provided to contestants of their score as they pass a checkpoint.

There have been few changes to the apps this year. I have purposely minimized the number of changes released this year to reduce the possibility of introducing bugs that affect events. It has been a busy year, with 30 events on the calendar in September and October alone. New versions of the Competitor app are planned, with useability, scoring, and productivity changes coming for Rallymaster. One noticeable change in Competitor will be the option to change the “ringy-dingy” checkpoint-detected sound to voice output. The app will provide the ability to announce the amount you were early or late at the checkpoint. “Early 3,” Late 17,” and “Zero” will be heard in your car next year. I’ll share more detail about the changes as we get closer to the December release date.

In January, I plan to present “What to do when things go wrong!” (tentative name) at the 2022 SCCA Virtual Convention. We’ll cover solutions to the Rallymaster concerns shared with me at Richta HQ: rescoring a leg due to discovering bad TSD calcs in the ideal leg time, throwing a leg, a competitor missing a restart checkpoint, and other hiccups incurred will be covered.
