Keyring Envokes USRRC Road Rally Memories

Clyde Heckler made me laugh in the last edition of Road Rally eNews. He did a great job telling the stories with the old dash plaques and gifts from past rallies, in the inaugural column for Dash Plaques and Rally Momentos!

The Rallymaster of the 2017 United States Road Rally Challenge gave all workers and teams a very cool keyring. Engraved with the SCCA RoadRally logo, it had a unique design, handier than the standard key rings to add more keys. The shape of the keyring was a steering wheel. On each side, a spring-loaded section pulls out and twists to add new keys. Great design. I still use it every day!

United States Road Rally Challenge Keychain – mine is on top and one of the few “new” remaining!

The USSRC was an excellent time for me. I was the equipment guy, and I had my Chevy van packed with tools, equipment, food for the Sunday afternoon BBQ, and other items deemed necessary to have along the way. I was also a Checkpoint Worker. We helped change a flat tire for a Rally Team during the event so her team could continue. I brought the leftover beer kegs from the Thursday evening Reception in Anchorage. In Seward, AK, I bought two large garbage cans and filled them with ice and beer kegs. We had cold beer on tap for the entire trip! Not while driving or working the event, of course!

During the final Pre-Check with Gail Engblom, I realized just how fantastic this rally would be. The teams were some of the country’s best rallyists, and one teams’ driver resided in England. The five Chevrolet teams entered the new Chevy Cruze and did their press reviews along the way. Some teams had wanted to try rallying for some time; they took on the “challenge” of the three-day rally as their first adventure! I was proud to be a part of the USRRC and making history for the great sport of Road Rally in Alaska! I finally knew what my wife had known all along. Our Rally Clan could take on the USRRC and do an admirable job of hosting fellow rallyists and provide a scenic, challenging route!

I wonder, did any of you receive one of these keyrings? If so, post up and share your story – I am curious to see the outreach and who else actually put the gift to daily use!
