My First Road Rally

Mates on the Rally Route and Life – Congrats to the Newlyweds!

by Cheryl Babbe, Rallygoddess

It arrived in an email to the SCCA Pointskeeper, Bruce Gezon, “Sharon Bringen just became my wife, Sharon Starr. Please change her name in the RRR’s and any results. Thanx, Gary Starr

First, from RReNews, Congratulations and Best Wishes! You have done the marriage test already — rallying together, ha!

When new folks come out to local events, I try to warn them just a bit — “Rallying with your mate can have you see them go deaf, dumb and blind before your very eyes! Stay calm, don’t say something you may regret!” Of course, I usually share that our sport of Road Rally is one of the few motorsports the “actively” supports mate swapping! We had two couples that did just that in our local rally program — they arrived with their respective spouses: the ladies would rally together, and their lads would run together! They would arrive at the end and enjoyed sharing their experiences over libations with everyone “happy”!

Gary and Sharon met in 2002, and have been together the last fifteen years. They finally decided to make it official, and it seems many had made the judgment that they had been married for years. Yes, you’ll notice she is barefoot in her wedding photo? Just right for that Hawaiian Isle “feel” to their ceremony! Gary, did you know there is rallying with the Hawaii Region? Sounds like a great place to honeymoon, right Sharon?

After meeting, Gary immediately introduced her to both TSD and Performance (stage) rallying which he had been competing in for many years. Teaching her how to navigate using the Timewise computer on local TSD’s in their 1999 Eclipse and crew for on performance rallies in his 1986 Dodge Omni GLH turbo. And like all longtime rallyists, they worked many TSD’s and performance rallies together over the years too!

Today they still run local and Regional tours together —especially liking the fast dirt/gravel ones put on by the Detroit Region! Sharon does not enjoy Course (trap) rallies, so Gary runs those with whomever he can find, filling either Driver or Navigator seat.

On National weekends Sharon often travels with Gary and works the events. As I matter of fact, my rally partner and I trekked to Wisconsin for Roads Scholar in June and encountered her friendly smile (and comments) many times over the weekend! Gary joked that he had gotten the reputation of “Starr brings his own Checkpoint Worker along” who, of course, is Sharon.

Whether the government agency repairs, prescription de viagra renews or maintains water infrastructure, having an asset management plan that local and national infrastructure management practitioners could use now and in the years to come is the right choice. Often making a National rally weekend into a mini-vacation, they take time to take in some non-rally tourist adventures too! After the recent Indianapolis Region events? They drove to Branson, Missouri, to see the play Samson, rode a 1/2-mile zip line and visited The Butterfly Palace.

A supportive mate, Gary says Sharon is not “into rallying” like he is, yet she knows how important it is and they enjoy sharing the sport. Just this last weekend they headed up to the Moonlight Monte, a Divisional Road Rally in Detroit, a 1200-mile round trip! Gary reported they had a great time on all the very brisk unpaved forest roads. The roads were the draw, as while they have them in northern Minnesota, they only use them on stage rallies in the area. Team Starr, the new Driver/Groom ‘n Navigator/Bride team garnered 2nd Place in Class E and 2nd Place Overall with 13 points on 15 legs!

Congrats on your recent finishes – both on the Moonlight Monte and your marriage Gary and Sharon! I look forward to seeing you down the road…especially Sharon, as it is always good to find “friendly” Checkpoint Workers along the trail!!
